Project Overview

COUNTRY: Uganda
LOCATION: Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, including Kampala City, Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi Districts, and Refugee Settlements
INDUSTRY FOCUS: Waste management and renewable energy

The project by UIDC aims to convert biomass waste into briquettes for use as an alternative energy source. It is designed to improve household livelihoods, boost socio-economic development, and promote environmental conservation through waste value addition. The project is primarily located in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and other cities across Uganda.

Problem Statement

Uganda faces significant challenges with energy demand, high deforestation rates due to reliance on biomass for cooking and heating, and inadequate waste management. The project addresses these issues by providing an alternative energy source that can reduce pressure on forests and improve waste management practices.

Project Stages

The project is in an expansion phase, with plans to establish more manufacturing and sales centers, conduct training on briquette making, and increase awareness of the benefits of using briquettes. The timeline includes short-term goals such as land acquisition and construction, as well as long-term targets like scaling up briquette use and outreach.

Stakeholders

The project involves partnerships with various stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and potential investors. Community engagement is a key aspect of the project, with plans to conduct training and awareness programs.

Solution

The project proposes the production of smoke-free briquettes made from waste materials. This approach not only offers an innovative solution to waste management but also provides a sustainable energy source. The technology used involves briquetting machines to convert agricultural and other waste into briquettes.

Impact

The project is expected to have a positive impact by reducing tree-cutting, lowering carbon emissions, and mitigating climate change. It also aims to generate income through the sale of briquettes, create jobs, and raise awareness about the benefits of using briquettes as an alternative energy source.

Funding

This project seeks funding of 450,000,000 UGX for expanding briquette production and sales. The plan includes:

  1. Acquiring land for permanent premises (150M UGX)

  2. Constructing production facilities (200M UGX)

  3. Purchasing improved briquette machines (50M UGX)

  4. Establishing more sales points (20M UGX)

  5. Scaling up outreach and training (30M UGX)
