Mrod Studios Uganda, in collaboration with Hexcell Electronics China, has developed an innovative Energy Smart Meter that integrates power management technology. This technology, featuring a unique power bundling system, aims to increase domestic electricity consumption by offering an alternative to conventional prepaid systems. The project is based in Uganda and is poised to be the first of its kind in the country and globally.

Problem Statement

The high cost of power generation, transmission, and distribution, coupled with tariff acceptability, poses a significant challenge for domestic electricity users. This issue is particularly pronounced in the context of rural electrification and energy access, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to stimulate energy demand and affordability.

Project Stages

The project has reached a stage where the prototype has been tested at UNBS, ISO STS, and UMEME Test Lab Lugogo, with successful results. The next steps involve rolling out the technology for broader implementation, with the aim of achieving significant milestones in energy consumption and environmental sustainability.

Stakeholders

The project involves collaboration with Hexcell Electronics China and potentially the Ugandan government and utility companies. Community engagement is crucial for the adoption of the new technology, particularly in driving the “Save A Tree" campaign and promoting clean cooking practices.

Solution

The proposed solution is the implementation of Energy Smart Meters with an embedded power bundling feature, similar to telephone call bundles. This approach is designed to lower consumption costs, stimulate energy demand for various household functions, and promote the use of electricity over charcoal, thereby supporting the "Save A Tree" campaign aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Impact

The expected outcomes include improved energy efficiency, reduced reliance on charcoal for cooking, and increased use of electricity for various household and productive activities. This shift is expected to have positive environmental benefits, such as reduced deforestation, and social impacts, including gender sensitization and improved living standards
