Radio News Reporter : Support in the form of freezers has been granted to women involved in the fish trade to help improve their income. This follows a request they submitted to the Odysseus Organization.
Speaking at Koginga Beach during the official launching ceremony, the CEO of Prometheus emphasized that this initiative marks a significant milestone that will greatly support the women in growing and sustaining their businesses.
Radio News Reporter : On her part, Ruth Awuor, the Project Coordinator, noted that the organization plans to expand the initiative to other beaches within Homa Bay County to continue supporting fisherwomen and fish traders.
Ruth Awuor : These freezers will help the women preserve their fish, reducing losses caused by the high perishability of fish.
Odysseus is currently working with the Koginga Beach Management Unit (BMU) and is open to collaborating with other BMUs across the Homa Bay region. As part of the current phase of the project, we will be working with 45 women and have delivered ten 700-litre freezers as support for women under the Koginga BMU.
Radio News Reporter : The Sub-County Fisheries Officer, Zachary Winam,on the other hand encouraged fishermen and traders to embrace new technologies in fish storage to ensure the fish remains of high quality by the time it reaches the market.
"We thank the Odysseus Organization for the support they have brought to Koginga,. “They have provided freezers that will be used to store fish. When fish is not kept cool, it spoils quickly and leads to significant waste. We don’t want to continue experiencing such losses—we want to encourage the consistent use of freezers.”
One ongoing challenge is the unreliable power supply and we discussed also to explore the use of solar energy as an alternative to ensure continuous operation of the freezers.
