Project Overview

COUNTRY: Uganda
LOCATION: Bushenyi District
INDUSTRY FOCUS: Waste management and renewable energy

Earthcare Recycling Limited's Ishaka Waste-to-Energy Project aims to establish a facility in Bushenyi district that converts biodegradable municipal waste into biogas using bio digester technology. The project objectives include supplying biogas to Kampala International University and providing bio slurry as manure for local farmers, thereby promoting sustainable waste management and renewable energy.

Problem Statement

The rapid urbanization is outpacing waste disposal capabilities, leading to environmental hazards and unsustainable landfill practices. Addressing these challenges is crucial for environmental protection, energy sustainability, and meeting Uganda's Vision 2040 goals for reliable and sustainable energy access.

Project Stages

The project is in the planning phase, with activities including training and sensitization, establishment of bio digester facilities, waste collection systems, and business development. The timeline and milestones are outlined with a target budget, indicating the project's structured planning and implementation strategy.

Stakeholders

The project involves collaboration with Kampala International University and the local community, including farmers who will benefit from the use of bio slurry. The project's success relies on the engagement of these stakeholders and their participation in training and waste collection efforts.

Solution

The project proposes the use of bio digester technology to decompose organic waste, producing biogas for clean cooking fuel and bio slurry for agricultural use. This approach not only offers an innovative solution to waste management but also contributes to carbon emission reduction and food security.

Impact

The project is expected to have a positive impact by managing biodegradable waste, reducing landfill burden, providing clean cooking fuel, and enhancing agricultural productivity through the use of bio slurry as manure. It also aims to create employment opportunities and promote research in bio-energy.
