Project Overview
COUNTRY: Kenya (with Pan-African expansion plans)
LOCATION: Multiple locations across Kenya
INDUSTRY FOCUS: Renewable energy, Carbon markets
ARK (Africa Renewables Katalyst) is developing a transformative platform that integrates mini-grid operators into the renewable energy certificate market. The initiative aims to enhance the economic and environmental value of renewable energy projects by providing seamless access to the I-REC market, addressing both energy access and climate change challenges in Africa.

Problem Statement
Mini-grid projects in Africa face a critical financing challenge. Despite their essential role in providing clean energy access, these projects struggle to attract investment due to limited revenue streams from low-income communities and long payback periods (9 years for a $1.2M investment). While the sector needs $220 billion to meet Africa's energy access goals, only $28 billion has been invested so far. Currently, mini-grids cannot monetize their environmental benefits, missing a significant opportunity for additional revenue through carbon markets.
Project Stages
The project is currently in its early implementation phase, having achieved GCC accreditation and successfully onboarded 4 out of 105 mini-grids from early adopters. The team has identified and segmented 402 mini-grids from 33 project developers in Kenya. The initiative is expanding its reach through strategic partnerships with development partners, including AMDA and REREC, for wider distribution.
Stakeholders
-
AMDA (Distribution Partner)
-
REREC (Distribution Partner)
-
Energy Auditor for R&D
Solution
The platform provides a comprehensive solution for mini-grid operators to participate in the renewable energy certificate market. The system facilitates operator onboarding, registry integration, verification and validation processes, and certificate trading in international markets. This innovative approach creates additional revenue streams through carbon credits and renewable energy certificates, with each Megawatt hour generating one REC valued at approximately $3.
Impact
The project contributes significantly to both environmental and economic objectives. By facilitating clean energy generation and carbon credit trading, it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating additional revenue streams for mini-grid operators. The platform supports Africa's renewable energy potential and assists corporations in offsetting their carbon emissions, contributing to global climate change mitigation efforts.
